The Health Commons


The Health Commons is drop-in center that is dedicated to serving Cedar-Riverside residents with a focus on promoting health and wellness in the community. Services at the Health Commons are free of charge and open to everyone, with a commitment to service based on respect, relationship, and collaboration that connects health and hope for all participants. Health Commons is a partnership between University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview, Augsburg College and East Africa Health Project. Health Commons at Darul Quba Cultural Center has been open since September 21, 2011 on Wednesday and Fridays 1-5pm. The center provides free services including 1:1 consultations with health providers, health education classes and exercise sessions.

Since it’s inception in September, 2011, Health Commons served 885 people and provided 2009 health and hygiene supplies and winter gear. Over 40 volunteers have provided service at Health Commons. Health Commons Collaborates with many neighborhood based organizations including Riverside Plaza Tenants Association, Somali Women’s Education Network, and Brian Coyle Cultural Center.

The purpose of this meeting was to create awareness about Health Commons and share plans to expand hours of service. Effective December 17th, Health Commons will be open in 2 locations:

· Darul Quba Cultural Center Wednesday and Fridays 1-5pm

· Riverside Plaza C-Building Level 2 Plaza Monday Thru Friday 2-4pm.

Exercise and Nutrition classes may be offered outside of these hours. Monthly calendar will be posted in front of Health Commons. If you need more information, Please call Hiba Sharif at 612-273-0112.
